Sunday, April 7
Hello everyone,
We are having a fine time! On Saturday, we visited
the wine country around Csurgo. Tiny, privately owned
fields side by side. And I do mean tiny - like 40X150
feet. Many of them had a small building on site, which
was the cellar - though a lot of them were no longer
vineyards, but growing Christmas trees instead.
Apparently there's no money in wine, they make enough
to keep their personal use taken care of, but not much
extra. But 80% of the Hungarian Christmas trees come
from the Csurgo area.
At the end of our walk through the vineyards, we were
treated to a fabulous wine-tasting and Goulash BBQ.
Amazingly great! A huge outdoor cooking vessel, filled
with pork and vegetables, and hand-pinched noodles,
kind of like gnocchi or spaetzle. We needed to sing a
couple of hours later, so when we got back to town, we
poured vats of coffee down the gullet to combat the
effects of wine in the afternoon!
The concert was a big hit, filling the church with a
lot of teens from the boarding school across the
street. A row of them got up to do "the wave" during a
couple songs. Lots of fun.
Sunday morning we went to the church service in
Kaposvar. This was a little different - only the
minister knew we were coming, and I think some of the
congregation disapproved of this Rock and Roll in
church! But we also had a lot of smiling faces, so I
just looked at them, and ignored the others. The
minister thanked us, saying, "you have your way of
celebrating God, and we have ours". Oh well.
For the rest of the week, we're staying in
Balatonfüred, in an old villa a couple blocks from the
lake. Tough life, eh?!
Love to you all,
Jim
